Objective: Lack of hygiene and the use of shared tools in hairdresser shops can result in the spread of diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to concentrate on the improvement of hygiene and health in hairdresser shops. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hygienic status of men and women’s hairdresser shops in the city of Sabzevar in 2008. Methods: This study was a descriptive-analytical study on 150 men’s and women’s hairdresser shops. Data collection was performed after questionnaire preparation and approval. Questionnaires included demographic data, building condition, personal hygiene, tools hygiene, and other parameters. Data collection was based on observation and interview. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software.
Results: Building status assessment was performed using 18 indicators, hygiene standards of tools were assessed using 9 indicators, and personal hygiene was evaluated using 10 indicators. Most men and women’s hairdresser shops had acceptable hygienic status.
Conclusion: Although hygienic status of men and women’s hairdresser shops was acceptable, women hairdressers were shown to have a better hygienic status. More emphasis on participation of barbers and hairdressers in special educational courses for barber association members is required to improve the condition.
