Background and purpose: Quantitative and qualitative control of the waste material can be
controlled by recycling the waste. For planning and making better decisions about the final
disposal, we need to understand the awareness and attitude of women toward waste matter
as they have the most exposure to producing the solid waste. Conducting such a stud can
help us understand the current situation and clarify the gap between the current and the
optimal situation. Methods and materials: This descriptive study involved 292 women, selected by
systematic sampling. The relevant data were collected by questionnaires, and were analyzed
in SPSS using descriptive statistics, correlation, t-test or its non-parametric equivalent. Results: 87.7% of the participants expressed a positive attitude towards recycling but only
26.4% of them showed excellent awareness. Women with university education showed a
more positive and a higher level of awareness than those with lower levels of education; the
difference was significant p<0.001). Employed women showed a higher level of awareness
than homemakers; and the difference was significant p<0.001).
Conclusion: The attitude of the women was beyond expectations, which provides us with a
chance to increase their knowledge. As regards the 78.1% population of women without
university education, it seems that the best plans for educating this big population must be
implemented before they graduate from high school. This can be tangible when we keep in
mind that we raise the knowledge of a family when we educate a student in the school
