Background and Purpose: AIDS is the acquired immunodeficiency with the viral agent of HIV reproduced rapidly in the body, and predisposing the patient to infections because of interference with the activity of the immunity system. Therefore, this study is conducted to determine the levels of awareness of high school students about AIDS, and ways of transferring and preventing AIDS in Daregaz, Iran.
Methods and Materials: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 600 high school students in Daregaz, Iran, sampled in two phases so that 3 boys’ high school and 2 girls’ high school were selected, with gender, class and school as clusters. In order to collect relevant data, a self-made questionnaire was used; its validity was confirmed by university professors and its reliability was evaluated with Cronbach’s alpha.
Results: The awareness of students about AIDS was good in 51% of the respondents, 44.8% average, and 4.2% weak. Their knowledge of ways of transferring AIDS ranged from average (74.5%) to weak (25.5%), and their awareness of its prevention methods ranges from good (81.5%) through average (15.5%) to weak (3%).
Conclusion: Based on the findings, it can be said that the students’ awareness of AIDS and its transfer is average, but their knowledge of ways of preventing is satisfactory
