Background: Surgery and anesthesia are associated with physiological changes that can affect different organs of the body and cause complications in the post anesthesia care unit.
Material and Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 305 patients in the age range of 18-80 years Vital signs of patients were evaluated from pre-anesthesia to recovery. Complications after anesthesia were also assessed in the recovery unit.
Results: In total, the prevalence of complications in recovery was 83.3%, and the three most common complications were pain, shivering, and restlessness, which occurred in 64.3%, 28.9%, and 28.5% of patients, respectively. The frequency of other complications include nausea and vomiting after surgery in 9.8%, delayed awakening in 1.3%, hypertension in 21%, hypotension in 6.2%, tachycardia in 7.5%, bradycardia in 1%. , tachypnea in 1.3%, hypoxia in 0.7% and laryngospasm in 0.7% of patients. The prevalence of pain in general anesthesia was significantly higher than in neuraxial. Also, patients who underwent general anesthesia were more restless during recovery than patients who underwent surgery under neuraxial anesthesia.
Conclusion: Considering the high incidence of complications after anesthesia in the recovery unit of the study center, a review should be done regarding the use of experienced personnel, more accurate monitoring equipment and better methods to prevent complications.
