Background: Academic burnout is a prominent challenge among students in medical sciences, with negative implications for mental health, academic performance, and future professional quality. Academic motivation has been identified as a key moderating factor that could mitigate burnout. This study aimed to explore the association between academic motivation and burnout among health sciences students.
Methods: This descriptive-analytical study surveyed 255 health students at North Khorasan University of Medical Sciences during the 2024–2025 academic year. Data were collected via standard academic burnout and motivation questionnaires. Analysis involved descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression (SPSS 23, p<0.05(
Results: The average score of academic motivation was 131.67, indicating a high level, while the mean burnout score was 41.85, reflecting a moderate level. Pearson’s correlation demonstrated a significant inverse relationship between motivation and burnout (p < 0.05), suggesting that higher motivation correlates with lower burnout. Female students exhibited significantly higher motivation than male students (p < 0.05). Regression analysis revealed that field of study significantly predicted burnout, whereas semester was a significant predictor of motivation (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Despite high motivation levels, students experienced moderate burnout, which was inversely related to motivation. These findings emphasize the importance of developing targeted educational and psychological interventions to enhance motivation, aiming to reduce burnout and promote mental well-being and academic success among students.
