Background: E-learning has been proposed as an essential supplementary tool to enhance dental education. Therefore, this study compared the effect and satisfaction of online and offline e-learning in the Pediatric Dentistry course II.
Methods: In this interventional study, 40 students who chose pediatric dentistry course II randomly were divided into online and offline training groups. A part of the educational package was placed in the form of digital images in the educational system of the university (Navid). The students of the online group were asked to attend the virtual class at the designated time. The offline group received the lessons uploaded in Navid system. At the end of half an academic year, a written test was taken from all the studied population. Data analysis was done using SPSS version 22 and independent samples t-test and chi-square test at the significance level <0.05.
Findings: 37.50% of participants were male and 62.50% were female. The average score of pediatric dentistry course II of the students in the online group was 15.21 ±1.73 and in the offline group was 16.00 ±1.35 (p=0.113). The average score of students' satisfaction with the teaching method in the online group was 78.11 ±21.31 and in the offline group was 76.27 ±14.30 (p=0.747).
Conclusion: The study findings indicated that dental students' learning scores and satisfaction levels with the theoretical Pediatric Dentistry course II are similar in both online and offline delivery modes. Confirmation of these results requires further verification through more rigorous studies with larger sample sizes.
