Background and Objective: The image that each person has of his body can affect his thinking and behavior. Dissatisfaction with this image may encourage him to undergo cosmetic surgery, despite the risks involved. This study was conducted with the aim of determining the factors affecting the attitude towards cosmetic surgery among students of Sabzevar University of Medical Sciences in 2019.
Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study in which 506 students were selected and included in the study. Participants were examined using three questionnaires: Attitude towards Cosmetic Surgery by Henderson King, Fear of Body Image by Littleton, Cyberspace by Lee et al., and demographic variables of age, gender, faculty of study, field of study, and semester. Data analysis was performed with relevant statistical tests using SPSS software, and a significance level of 0.05 was considered.
Results: The average age of the participants was 21.54 ± 3.272. Most of the participants in the study were female(67.2%), health faculty students(22.7%) with environmental health field of study(22.4%) and in the third semester of study(25.3%). A statistically significant difference was observed between age and attitude towards cosmetic surgery and between the average attitude towards cosmetic surgery among faculties(p<0.05).
Conclusion: According to the findings, students' attitude towards cosmetic surgery is influenced by various factors. This indicates the effective role of social and cultural contexts in the formation of this attitude. Therefore, designing interventions and educational programs to promote a healthy body image and change attitudes towards surgery among students seems necessary.
