Background and Aim:
Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), also known as Leishmania infection, is an infectious disease caused by the Leishmania parasite, particularly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions and recognized as an important endemic disease in Iran. Given the increasing prevalence of CL and its impact on public health, the present study aimed to investigate the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, climatic influences, prevention methods, control strategies, treatment options, disease burden reduction, and improvement of public health in affected areas.
Materials and Methods:
This study was conducted as a narrative review to comprehensively examine cutaneous leishmaniasis by searching relevant keywords in reputable national and international databases such as Magiran, SID, Google Scholar, and PubMed without any restrictions on time, location, or methodology. All studies with the title "cutaneous leishmaniasis" were reviewed; articles with unavailable full texts or those not in English were excluded. After initial screening and selection of specialized keywords, a total of 126 articles were chosen for the final review.
Conclusion:
Cutaneous leishmaniasis, as an ancient endemic disease, remains a significant health threat in Iran and requires identification of the multiple factors influencing its spread, along with necessary measures for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. This study can serve as a basis for developing health policies, prevention programs, and therapeutic strategies to reduce the incidence and complications of the disease, as well as to enhance public awareness regarding the prevention and management of cutaneous leishmaniasis.
