Background and Aims: Dissociative experiences are significantly associated with certain psychiatric disorders and can lead to decreased quality of life and impairments in education and occupation, particularly in young individuals. On the other hand, given the increasing levels of problematic mobile phone use in young people, the aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dissociative experiences and their relationship with problematic mobile phone use among university students.
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 354 students from Birjand University of Medical Sciences participated in the study, in the academic year 2020-2021, and completed demographic data, the Dissociative Experiences Scale-II, and the Mobile Phone Problematic Use Scale. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 18.
Results: In the present study, the prevalence of dissociative experiences, dissociative amnesia, depersonalization/de-realization, and absorption/imagination was 2.7%, 7.8%, 2.5%, and 4.3%, respectively. The prevalence of dissociative experiences varied among age, field of study, and type of residence. The correlation analysis showed a positive and significant correlation between dissociative experiences and problematic mobile phone use (r=0.211, P=0.001).
Conclusion: These findings revealed that higher levels of dissociative experiences are strongly associated with problematic use of mobile phone.
