From a psychiatric perspective, FM and SSD can be considered as part of a spectrum of somatic symptom expression. Psychiatrists are trained to consider the biopsychosocial model, which indicates that health and illness result from the interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors. This model helps to deepen the understanding of the patient's experience and encompasses not only physiological aspects but also cognitive-emotional responses and social contexts that influence health. Research has shown that psychological distress is associated with the severity of fibromyalgia symptoms, underscoring the importance of integrated care programs. In this brief article, we aim to draw readers’ attention to an important issue in the diagnosis and understanding of fibromyalgia and somatic symptom disorder, particularly the conflicting perspectives held by psychiatrists and rheumatologists in this field. The intersection of these two disciplines clarifies the complexities related to these conditions, which in turn causes confusion for both healthcare professionals and patients. This brief review emphasizes that the psychiatric perspective on distinguishing fibromyalgia (FM) from somatic symptom disorder (SSD) is more holistic and integrated compared to the strict criteria used by rheumatologists.
