Background and Aims: In menopause, Strogen hormone decrease suddenly by cessation of ovarian function. Physical and mental changes occur in more than 80% of menopausal women. Anxiety and stress are the main problems of this period. Due to the side effects of chemical drugs that used to reduce the menopausal symptoms, nowadays use of herbal treatments has attracted the attention of women. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Rosa damascena on anxiety and stress in postmenopausal women.
Materials and methods: In this narrative review, article without time limit and using the keywords of menopause, menopause symptoms, anxiety, stress, medicinal plants, complementary medicine, traditional medicine, Rosa damascena and its Persian’s keywords searched in Persian and English databases, Web of science, PubMed, Scopus, Magiran, SID, Google Scholar until 2022.
Result: The result of 39 articles shows that, Rosa damascena because of its compounds such as flavonoids, terpenes, 2-phenylethyl alcohol and linalool can be effective in reducing anxiety and stress. Also, Rosa damascena contains steric, ketone, aldehyde and terpenic compounds that reduce anxiety by stimulating the brain’s olfactory center and induces calming effects in the body. If used instead of therapeutic amounts, no dangerous side effects have been identified. Mild gastrointestinal complications have been reported in a study following the consumption of Rosa damascena petals alone and without sepals.
Conclusion: Rosa damascena is an inexpensive an available herbal sedative that is suggested to be studied in interventional clinical studies to improve anxiety and stress in menopausal women.
