Evaluation of nitrate and nitrite content of drinking water of Sabzevar in fall 2010

Abstract

Objectives: Contamination of aquifers with nitrite and nitrate is one of the biggest
ecological and health problems. Nitrate toxicity results in severe consequences or even
death. The aim of this study was to identify the concentration of nitrite and nitrate in
drinking water sources in Sabzevar in fall 2010. Methods: This study was a descriptive cross-sectional study on 26 samples from city
water distribution network. These samples were representative of the drinking water
network of the city of Sabzevar. Since the sources of each region are known, sources can
also be evaluated based on the analysis of these samples. Nitrate content was measured at
the wavelength of 220 nm, while nitrite content was measured at 543 nm wavelength using
spectrophotometer.
Results: Mean and standard deviation of nitrate and nitrite ions concentrations in all
samples were 13.65 ± 0.039 mg/L and 9.156 ± 0.006 mg/L, respectively. Nitrite and nitrate
concentrations of none of the samples were higher than the standard values suggested by
the World Health Organization (50 and 3, respectively).
Conclusion: Sample analysis revealed that samples taken from 8 wells in the first phase of
Baghara were largely different from the rest of the sources. Regarding the close distance
between these wells and other sources of drinking water in Sabzevar, there is a probability
that the city is at risk of future nitrate contamination of drinking water.
