Background and purpose: Death toll due to motorcycle accidents is on the rise all over
the world. Ninety percent of these accidents lead to death or damage. The present
research is intended to investigate the causes of motorcycle accidents admitted to Emdad
Hospital in Sabzevar, Iran.
Methods and materials: the sampling followed the Poisson pattern. In this pattern, the
admission of motorcycle accidents were recorded up to 325 cases. The study is a
descriptive analytical one. Data collection was done by questionnaires and interviews.
Data were analyzed in SPSS using chi-square, independent t-test and other statistical
tests; the Cronbach alpha for the questionnaire was 0.85. Results: The riders’ age ranged between 18 and 23; their education mostly was below the
high school level. 83.4% of the riders did not use helmets; 65% did not have motorcycle
driving license; most admissions occurred in the afternoon.
Conclusion: Based on the results, training motorcycle riders, particularly the younger
ones, and encouraging them to use helmets for reducing damages is necessary
