Abstract
Introduction: Research self-efficacy refers to the assessment and confidence in performing research activities. Individual factors, such as research self-efficacy, are among the influential determinants of academic progress. This study aimed to examine the status of research self-efficacy and its relationship with academic performance among dental students in Macro-Region 9 of Iran during the academic year 2023–2024. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 420 students were selected using stratified sampling from universities in Mashhad, Birjand, and Bojnord. Data collection was conducted using a valid and reliable research self-efficacy questionnaire. Academic performance was assessed based on self-reported grade point averages (GPAs). Data were analyzed using SPSS software via Pearson correlation coefficient, independent samples t-test, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) at a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The mean age of participants was 23.75 ± 1.17 years, with most respondents being girl (55%) and eighth-term students (21.2%). The mean score for research self-efficacy among dental students in Khorasan was 159.18 ± 36.93, indicating a moderate level. A significant positive correlation was observed between research self-efficacy and GPA (Pearson’s r = 0.381, p < 0.05). However, no significant association was found between term level and research self-efficacy (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Given the moderate level of research self-efficacy among students, designing and implementing empowerment programs could potentially enhance their research self-efficacy levels.
