Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the consumption pattern of household insecticides in Gilan province in 2023.
In a descriptive study, 380 residents of Gilan Province were selected using a non-probability convenience sampling method. A standardized questionnaire with confirmed validity and reliability was used to investigate the consumption pattern. The chi-square test of independence was employed to examine the relationship between two categorical variables.
The results of this study showed that 96.6% of the studied population use at least one type of insecticide per year, the most used model of household pesticides in Gilan province is pesticide B and it is also of spray type. The results of this study showed that 70.3% of users mixed and disposed poison containers with other household solid waste. The Φ and Cramér's V statistical analysis showed that there is a significant relationship between education and the location of insecticide storage, going home after spraying, choosing the right time to spray, reading the brochure before using and using personal protection (P≤0.05), but they are not related to choosing the proper disposal method of containers and insecticide residue (P≤0.05).
Considering the high percentage of people who use insecticides at home, as well as the disposal of the remaining part of this hazardous household waste along with normal household waste, as well as the availability of all kinds of insecticides in grocery stores, proper management, public education, education of poison distributors (grocery stores) can play an important role in reducing health and environmental risks.
