Abstract

Abstract
Background and Purpose: Midwives' role in abortion care necessitates understanding therapeutic and criminal abortion laws. The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of role-play and standardized patient scenarios in enhancing midwifery students' clinical performance on abortion legal issues.
Materials and Methods: 75 midwifery students from Mashhad University participated in the study, undergoing training workshops and practical sessions using both teaching methods. Data collection included clinical performance evaluation forms and educational materials like source books and guidelines. Data analysis utilized SPSS software.
Results: Both teaching methods significantly improved students' performance with no notable difference between them. Both role-play and standardized patient scenarios were effective in enhancing clinical performance.
Conclusion: Both teaching methods positively impacted students' clinical performance, suggesting educators can choose based on feasibility and cost-effectiveness. Role-play may be preferred due to potential cost and logistical challenges associated with standardized patient scenarios when teaching abortion legal issues to midwifery students.
