Background and Aims: The implementation of theoretical skills acquired in the clinical setting is achieved through the active participation of students in the process of learning and making visible changes in their behaviors. Considering the importance of nursing profession and application of behavioral learning theory in acquiring clinical competencies of this field, this study was conducted to review the applications of behaviorism theory in nursing education of Iran.
Materials and Methods: This study is a narrative review. Data were collected by searching Persian and English keywords: web-based education, competency-based education, mastery learning, and computer-based simulation separately and in combination in internal and international databases. Inclusion criteria were the existence of keywords in the title and abstract of articles, all English and Persian articles with full-text access prepared in Iran, and the exclusion criteria were research topics unrelated to nursing education and non-native studies of Iran. A total of 330 articles were obtained and reviewed and 32 related articles which were between 2002 and 2016 were selected and intended data were extracted.
Results: Based on findings of this study, using behavioral learning theory as a complementary method of traditional nursing education, provides the opportunity for critical thinking and problem solving skills in addition to obtaining theoretical and practical knowledge of the nursing students.
Conclusion: Considering the advantages of using behaviorism theory in teaching clinical skills, it is suggested that, educational approaches such as computer training, web-based education and simulated programs, achievement or competency-based education be included in nursing curriculum along with traditional teaching methods.
