The Medication-Errors and Counter Strategies of Nurses’ and Nursing Students’

Abstract

Background and Aims: Medication errors are considered as serious and the most frequentworldwidemedical errorsthreatening patient’s safety and mayeven lead to their death. The purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of medication errors and  providingcounterstrategies to nurses and nursing students.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive – analytical study was conducted on 327 nursing staff of Khatam-al-Anbia Hospital and 62 intern students in faculty of nursing and midwiferyin Zahedan, Iran. Theenrollment was based oncensus in 2015. A valid and reliable questionnaire was applied to collect data. Descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA using SPSS16,on the other hand,were applied to analyze the data.
Results: The results showed that the most common causeof medication errors of nurseswasfatigue due toincreased workload (97.8%), and the most common onefor nursing students was calculation errors (77.4%).
Conclusion:Considering the results, it is recommended that nurse-managers sort out the human resource problems. Providingin-service workshops and educations about preparing medications, side-effects of drugs and pharmacological knowledge and using electronic medication cards could also result inmedication errorreduction.
