Non-pharmaceutical Methods of Anxiety and Pain Control in Children

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: Therapeutic procedures are the most common source of pain in children. Experience of pain is often associated with fear, anxiety, and stress. Anxiety reduces the pain threshold and therefore an anxious person feels more pain than the average person. Methodology: Descriptive, case-control, cohort, or clinical trial studies were chosen for this research. Keywords were searched in articles published during 1987-2011; English and Persian articles were chosen.
Results: Results of the various research studies revealed that implementation of various distraction programs leads to reduction of the anxiety and pain related to stress and painful procedures in different age groups. Conclusion: Prevention is an important part of nursing care which should be taken into consideration by the nurses in all procedures. Health care professionals should make the effort to accompany painful practices with interventional procedures in order to impose minimal pain and anxiety on the patients and reduce the unwanted effects to minimal levels
