Assessment of knowledge and attitude toward iron supplement use in mothers’ of 6-24 months infants, referred to Sabzevar Health care centers in 2013

Abstract

Introduction: Iron is an important and necessary element in human body, especially in first 4 to 6 months of life. This element plays an important role in learning, memory and sensory motor activities. Nowadays, costly supplementary plans are taking place all over the country. According to the important role of mothers in feeding infants, Evaluation of knowledge and attitude toward iron supplement use in mothers of 6-24 months infants in different regions seemed necessary. Materials and methods: Mothers of 6-24 months infants referring to health care centers enrolled in this descriptive – cross sectional study. 97 mothers were chosen by random sampling and necessary data was collected by questionnaire. After coding, gathered data was analyzed by SPSS 16 software. Result: Average age of mothers and infants mean age was 27, 19 years and 14.43 months respectively. 77.3% of mothers used iron drops in their children. . There was no significant relationship between mother’s age, education and occupation and iron use.
Conclusion: In the present research, 94% of mothers were aware of iron drop’s advantages and 95.5% of them know the ways to increase iron absorption. Also, 93,9% of mothers liked to use iron. Despite of mother’s positive point of view toward iron use, 22.7% of them refused to give supplement because of it’s complications.
