Study of status self-medication among mothers of third and fourth grade elementary students In the city of Isfahan in 1392

Abstract

Introduction and purpose: incorrect use of drugs is growing in the world, increasingly. This study was designed in Isfahan city to survey of status self-medication among mothers of third and fourth grade elementary students.
Materials Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 126 mothers of third and fourth elementary grade student. Data were collected through a questionnaire. In this study, from two Department of Education of elementary school, the samples were randomly selected. And it was invited from the mothers of samples to answer the designed questionnaire. After completing the questionnaire and entering data in SPSS version-21, the data were analyzed using Descriptive statistical tests (number, percentage, mean) and Analytical statistical test (Chi-square).
Results: The most common diseases that self-treated were consist of catch cold 46% (58 people), headache 42/9% (54 people), respectively. The highest frequencies of self-medication depending on the type of consumed drug were related to the cold tablets 50.8% (64 people), pain-killers 50% (63 people). The most important reasons of self-therapy were determined previous experience of disease 40.5% (51 people), deny the importance of disease 31.7% (40 people), availability of drug 30.2% (38 people).
Conclusion: Given the high prevalence of self-medication, designing and implementing training programs to enhance understanding of the risks of self-therapy among various social groups seems to be necessary.
