Opium consumption frequency survey among patients with type 2 diabetes in a rural area in Bandar Gaz district in 2018 year.

Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common cauuses of disease in the world Opium consumption one of the most prevalent social problems in Iran. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of opium consumption among patients with type 2 diabetes in a rural area Bandar Gaz district in 2018 year.

Materials and methods: This study was a cross-sectional study conducted on all diabetic patients who were residents in rural areas of Bandar Gaz County in 2018 year. Data were obtained from patient records in a preset checklist. SPSS Software and Pearson's chi-squared test were used for data analysis

Results: 757 diabetic patients with age 12 to 92 years old (mean age 59.9 years) were evaluated. The frequency of smoking is currently 6.7% (n=46).The frequency of opium consumption in diabetes patients was estimated at 10.2 % (n=77). Among 77 cases, 79.2% were male and 41.6% were aged 50-59 years.Opium consumption were mainly(84.4%) married , 33.8% were farmer, 37.7% were elimentary education, and 46.8% were low level of incomeIn addition, diabetes and its complication was the main cause of substance abuse in diabetic patients (67.5%). There were significant differences between the opium consumption in diabetic patients and demographics characteristics including gender, age groups, marital status and income (p<0.0001).
