Abstract
Abstract
Background:
Given that academic pressures, educational settings, and stressful clinical responsibilities can contribute to high-risk behaviors among medical students, this study aimed to assess these behaviors.
Materials:
This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in 1404 (2025) at Dezful University of Medical Sciences using census sampling. Data from 494 students (out of 600 distributed questionnaires) were analyzed after screening and removal of invalid cases. The data collection tool was the Mohammadi High-Risk Behavior Questionnaire, completed after obtaining informed consent. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS statistical software, including descriptive statistics, Kolmogorov–Smirnov, Mann–Whitney, and Kruskal–Wallis tests with a significance level of 0.05.
Results:
The most prevalent high-risk behaviors were: intimate relationships (36.4%), smoking (27.8%), waterpipe use (27.2%), unauthorized absence (25.8%), and alcohol consumption (22.3%). Suicide attempts were least frequent (3.8%). Mean scores for high-risk behaviors were significantly higher in male students (P < 0.001). Age and field of study also showed a significant relationship with these behaviors (P < 0.001), while marital status did not (P = 0.494).
Conclusion:
Findings indicate high-risk behaviors are prevalent among students at this university, associated with age, gender, and field of study. Therefore, focusing on mental health, educational programs, and preventive interventions is crucial for reducing risk factors.
