Evaluating the effectiveness of topical cefazolin solution compared to normal saline in reducing cesarean section infection

Abstract

Introduction: The second most common complication of cesarean section is infection. Therefore, finding a way to treat this problem is essential. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of topical cefazolin solution compared to normal saline in reducing cesarean incision infections.
Materials and Methods: The clinical trial was conducted on 108 patients who were candidates for cesarean section and were randomly divided into three groups: first intervention (cefazolin), second intervention (normal saline), and control The desired medications were administered postoperatively and wound complications in patients were recorded using a wound complications checklist, including body temperature, redness, bruising, and swelling. SPSS version 21 software and chi-square and ANOVA tests were used to compare the data.
Results: The results of our study showed that the mean edema score in the cefazolin group was lower than in the other groups (0.08 vs. 0.33 and 0.44) (P=0.002). Similarly, the mean bruising score in the cefazolin group was lower than in the other groups (0.11 vs. 0.44 and 0.22) (P=0.014). The mean pain score was also lower in the cefazolin group (4.75 vs. 5.6 and 5.02) (P=0.047). However, no significant differences were observed among the three groups regarding other variables such as redness, discharge, and wound edge separation (P>0.05).
Conclusion: The results of the present study indicate a positive effect of cefazolin administration in reducing infection and surgical incision complications. Therefore, this solution should be used in post-cesarean patients to reduce wound infection.
