Abstract

Sleep problems, especially among students and young working adults, have become a serious issue. This review article examines the effectiveness of relaxation and mindfulness podcasts in improving sleep quality.
Content is not the only determining factor in the effectiveness of these podcasts; audio features such as tone of voice, speech rate, and background sounds also play an important role in sleep quality. Research shows that auditory stimuli can affect physiological responses such as heart rate and blood pressure. Studies have shown that calm and slower speech, compared to fast or loud speech, has a greater impact on inducing relaxation. Additionally, meditations with a slower pace, compared to faster meditations, lead to deeper relaxation and improved sleep quality. On the other hand, natural sounds like gentle rain, ocean waves, or soothing music can enhance feelings of calmness and reduce stress levels, which helps promote better sleep. Studies indicate that these podcasts, by providing guided meditations, breathing exercises, and relaxing narrations, can help reduce insomnia symptoms. Audio features such as a calm tone, slow speech rate, and natural background sounds play a key role in inducing relaxation. However, challenges such as unequal access, differences in individual preferences, and over-reliance on these tools will exist. This article suggests that content creators can increase the effectiveness of these podcasts by optimizing audio features and diversifying the content.
