Evaluation of anthropometric and functional indices and musculoskeletal abnormalities in girl and boy students

Abstract

Introduction: The future of any country depends on the dynamism and health of its young forces. Today's passive lifestyle is associated with increased obesity, overweight and their negative consequences. The aim of this study was to investigate the anthropometric, functional indices and musculoskeletal abnormalities in female and male students.
Materials and Methods: 324 boy and 494 girl students participated in this project satisfactorily. Consent form and physical activity questionnaire were obtained from the subjects and anthropometric indices, isometric strength of leg muscles, flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, curvature of kyphosis and lordosis, leg angle and elbow width of the subjects were recorded. All data were recorded in Wellness software and statistical analyzes were performed using SPSS software version 21.
Results: There was a significant difference between the mean of body composition indices and stature and fitness factors in boys and girls, but this difference was not shown in flexibility. In physical fitness factors, 55.4% of girls and 69.8% of boys were below average. The relationship between body mass index with waist to pelvis ratio, total body water in both boys and girls and also with kyphosis angle in girls was positive and significant and with density and maximum oxygen consumption in both groups was inverse and significant.
Conclusion: A high percentage of male and female students were not in a good condition in terms of obesity and overweight, physical fitness and musculoskeletal disorders. Therefore, the importance of physical education and correction of posture in students is important.
