An study of the self-esteem and its relationship with some social factors in university students in Medical University at Sabzevar during 1384-85

Abstract

Background and Purpose:
A cursory look at the available literature shows that man has continuously been attempting to know himself. To do so, an understanding of the values, aims and most importantly self-esteem have played an important role to help one know himself . If there is a big difference between what one wants to be and what one really is, one will suffer low self-esteem. To increase self-esteem, we need to identify every relevant factor having some sort of influence on self-esteem . Otherwise, one will face such disorders as depression , fear, and anxiety. This study aimed at measuring the level of self-esteem in university students and its possible relationship with academic achievement.

Method:
In this descriptive study, the Aizeng Test of self-esteem was administered to a stratified sample of 316 university students. A Pacearson correlation analysis, a t-test and kruskal-wallis test were run on the obtained data.

Results:
The sample showed a mean score of 20.44 and a median of 21.25 and a standard deviation of 2.44 on self-esteem Test.
no significant relationship was not found between the students’ level of self-esteem and their majors , year of study, marital status, place of birth and their GPA. However a significant relationship was observed between the students’ sex and age from one hand and their self-esteem from the other hand.
The participant in this study enjoyed a moderate measure of self-esteem. It seems logical for authorities in universities to pay more attention to psychological factors which play significant roles in students’ academic achievement. Moreover, it is essential to hold some workshops to boost the students’ self-esteem. The previous done research studies confirm the findings of the present study
