Survey of the Professional Problems of Midwives Employed in Sabzevar, Iran (2007)

Abstract

Background and Purpose: Efforts in improving the community health status requires tactfulness, accuracy and special insight, and the route to achieving these is aligned with the penetration of health services into the community. Midwifes also play a central role in the team as well as a linking chain to the enhancement of community objectives. This is because midwifery deals with the reproduction of a society including all social, physiologic and psychological factors, affecting the quantity and quality of reproduction in the society. Therefore, identifying the professional problems and presenting solutions for them is of paramount importance in midwifery. Methods and Materials: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, all employed midwives in Sabzevar were surveyed, and 70 midwives were asked to complete a questionnaire. The obtained data were analyzed in SPSS using chi-square. Results: The results indicated that 48.8% of the midwives employed in hospital and 22.2% employed in health center were not satisfied with their profession. Welfare and sports programs were noted as good (5%), weak (62.5%), average (32.5%) by the hospital midwives; while, for health center midwives, these figures were 14.3% average, and 85.7% weak. As for the continuous education for midwives in line with the standards, 82.1% had consistent views, and 92.6% expressed their desire to continue education to higher levels.
Conclusion: On the basis of the findings of the current research, most midwives felt the need to continue education; most of them did nit have the required immunity against contagious hematological diseases; most of them considered the role of continuous education according to the world standards as necessary; and most considered the welfare and sports programs as weak.
