Monitoring the prevalence of Goiter and Urine Iodine in Students in Fariman, Iran in 2009

Abstract

Background and Purpose:
Lack of lodine causes a number of diseases including endemic Goiter , hypothyroidism , Kritinism and congenital anomalies. With respect to the important of these diseases , the present study was conducted to monitor the national program of combating Iodine deficiency in Fariman , Iran in 2009.
Methods and Materials:
In this descriptive cross sectional study, 804 students aging 6 to 18 years old from both genders were selected through randomized cluster sampling, and were examined for the iodine deficiency through urine analysis of 100 cases randomly ; iodine measurement was conducted by acid digestion method. Results:
Total prevalence of goiter was 29.1 (27.2% goiter grade 1, and 1.9% grade 2). Median of urine iodine was 110 μgr. In 45.1% of the sample, urine iodine was lower than 100 μgr/L. Conclusion:
The results indicate that disorders due to iodine deficiency are considered of an average prevalence; and the disorder still remains a problem after the program has been running for over 20 years
