Relationship between temperament type and treatment adherence and perseverance and passion of opioid abusers referring to addiction treatment clinics in Shirvan

Abstract

Introduction:Drug use in the world and in Iran with a history of several thousand years is increasing. Types of temperaments based on the theory of Hippocrates' four mixtures have long been discussed in traditional Iranian medicine. This research was conducted with the aim of investigating the relationship between the four types of temperaments with addiction, especially the treatment adherence and perseverance and passion of consumers. Methods:A randomized cohort study was performed on 139 eligible patients in 7 clinics in Shirvan city from January 2019 to June 2020. Two-stage sampling was performed three months apart. Continuous use of a drug for at least one year and absence of chronic diseases were the criteria for entry and change of temperament during the study, temperament correction and recurrence of use were the criteria for exclusion. Demographic questionnaires, temperament determination, perseverance and passion of Duckworth and treatment adherence were used by the client. Data were analyzed in SPSS16 using descriptive and analytical tests at 95% confidence level. Results:The mean age of the subjects was 38.04±11.4 years, of which 63.3% were male. There was no significant relationship between quantitative and qualitative variables with the type of temperament; Also, no significant relationship was observed between the type of temperament with the treatment adherence and perseverance and passion. Conclusion:Although no relationship was found between the main variables of the research, but regarding subvariables and demographics, useful results were obtained; Considering the novelty of this research, continuation of this path with additional research is suggested to interested researchers.
