Background and Aims: Creating an appropriate setting for development and actualization of students with different Scientific, social and cultural abilities is one of the responsive education package’s achievements in health reform plan. Whereas emotion regulation and management is one of the important needs of students and empowering them in this field is a necessity, this study investigates the relationship between emotion regulation strategies and personality factors in Big Five theory toward this goal.
Materials and Methods: 370 participants from Hakim Sabzevari University of Iran filled out the emotion regulation questionnaire (ERQ) and the NEO-FFI. This study is of a descriptive and correlational type. T-test and Pearson correlation coefficient and one way analyze Variance were employed to analyze the data.
Results: Statistical analysis of the results indicated a significant positive relationship between neuroticism and suppression and a negative significant relationship between neuroticism and extraversion. There was a positive significant relationship between reappraisal and extraversion, conscientious and a negative significant relationship between reappraisal and neuroticism. There was no significant relationship between reappraisal and suppression, which indicated that they were used independently. The result of T-test demonstrated a significant difference between men and women in use of suppression (mean = 3.31 for women and mean = 3.66 for men, Sig = 0.041).The results of one-way ANOVA revealed that there were significant differences between different majors in using suppression.
Conclusion: Individuals with different personality traits use different strategies to regulate their emotions.
