Introduction:: Several studies have shown that various factors are associated with hypertension. It seems that obesity is one of these factors. Evaluation of hypertension and hypertension and its association with body mass index (BMI) in Mahabad city was the aim of this study.
Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted in urban population of Mahabad city in 2014. Total of 2763 male and female participants had participated in this study by use of non random sampling. Blood pressure levels was determined according to JNC7 (The Seventh Report of the International Committee of the Association of Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure) criteria and standards for BMI was determined according to the latest World Health Organization classification. Health facilities werebuilt in the city (north, south and center of the city)and demographic characteristics, blood pressure and BMI were collected by trained nursing students. Data was analyzed by SPSS 20 software using frequency distribution, percentage and test mining Pearson correlation and ANOVA tests.
Results: About 48/2% of study participants were female and 51/8% were male.There wasn’t any significant difference in case of blood pressure between genders. The mean BMI score in women (28/9 ± 5/47) washigher than the men (26/19 ± 4/2)(p= 0/000). about 40/72% of participants were overweight and 32/32% were obese. Moreover among participants, 46/39% of them were pre-hypertensive and 19/93% had high blood pressure. In terms of BMI, 18/60% of systolic pre hypertensive participants and 17/01% of diastolic pre hypertensive participants were overweight;7/16% of participants with hypertension were obese.
