Objectives:
Hygiene is defined as the science that prevents diseases, increases life span and improves public health in human societies. One important branch of this science is environmental hygiene which deals with developing healthy citizens and cities. Mosques as a holy center defending the holy religion of Islam should be a good example made based on Islamic teachings which emphasize sanitation and hygiene. Hence, this study aims at studying the hygiene and sanitation of the mosques in Sabzevar. Method:
The statistical population of this descriptive study consisted of all the mosques in Sabzevar. To gather the needed data, the researchers developed a 44-item questionnaire getting information on personal building and instrument hygiene in these mosques. The questionnaires were completed through observation and interview techniques. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS. Findings:
The findings of this study showed that %43.28 of mosques enjoyed suitable level of building ( construction) hygiene, %69.15 of them enjoyed good instrument hygiene, and only 9.6 percent showed suitable level of personal hygiene. Moreover, It was revealed that %19.8 of these mosques suffered bad hygiene status because of using shared ( common ) tents for men and women, %31.8 of which were located in the southern parts of the town. Conclusion:
On the whole, it seems that the mosques in Sabzevar enjoy a suitable hygiene status. However, Khademin ( people giving services to people in mosques) do not enjoy a good personal hygiene, specially in mosques located in the southern parts of Sabzevar.
