Background and Purpose: The need for drinking water with a satisfactory quality is constantly on the rise. Fluor is one of the elements in water which is essential in lower concentrations but harmful in higher concentrations. This study was conducted to enquire into the status of fluor levels in the drinking water resources of Sabzevar, Iran. Methods and Materials: The study is descriptive cross-sectional, and the specimens were sent to the laboratory (of Health Center in Sabzevar, Iran) over the years 2003-2007 for chemical test purposes. The measurement of fluor ion was conducted on 85 water specimens by spectrophotometer (Unico 2150 Model). Results: In Sabzevar, the average levels of fluor in the 85 urban and rural specimens tested was 0.51 ppm. Highest levels are associated with Filshore (3.5 ppm) and lowest with Tondok, Keizore, Nahaldan, Dastooran, and Mazinan (0.1 ppm). Only 14.2% were found to fall in the normal range (0.7 – 1.2 ppm) while in 4.71% of the specimens, the amount of fluor was higher than expected.
Conclusion: The level of fluor in most urban and rural resources of drinking water is less than standards.
