Background and Purpose: Religious beliefs have been an old companion of human beings from old times, and have played an incomparable role as the greatest guide of humanity. Uni-versity admission and starting the life of a student can be considered as the beginning of con-frontation with the unknown, changes and alterations in life which render outcomes such as fear, anxiety, unknown future, behavioral and accommodation disorders. This study was con-ducted to compare the religious beliefs of male and female students of Azad Islamic Univer-sity of Sabzevar, Iran in 2008. Methods and Materials: This cross-sectional descriptive study involved all university stu-dents taking courses in the summer term of 2008 at Azad Islamic University of Sabzevar, Iran. A questionnaire which was validated and its reliability was acceptable, was used for da-ta collection. The obtained data were analyzed in SPSS.
Results: The results indicated that the study sample included 455 students, with an age range of 17 to 46 years, and mean and standard deviation of 23.15±4.73, where 213 were male (47%) and 238 female (53%). Almost 75% were single and the rest married. Their religious beliefs scores were calculated to be 68.57±6.9, and the religious scores of two groups were significant (p=0.10). Married students had a higher score than the single students (p=0.100). Also, students residing in dormitories had stronger beliefs than other students (p=0.20). Being rural or urban dweller and terms of education did not have any impact on the religious beliefs scores of the two groups. Conclusion: Because of stronger religious beliefs in female students, it is recommended that female students get employed in different sections of student administration. Also, due to effect of marriage and dorms on religious beliefs, we recommend that barriers against marriage are removed, and dorms are provided for all students coming from other cities.
