Background and purpose: fasting during pregnancy is a complex and controversial issue.
As with the advantages of fasting in Islamic teachings, every Muslim is likely to fast as a
rite. However, a common concern for women and the gynecologists is its probable side
effects on maternal and neonatal health. This article is intended to review the effects of
fasting during pregnancy and lactation.
Methods and materials: Articles selected for review were descriptive, case-control,
cohort and clinical trial. The key words were searched from 1960 to 2011, and both Persian
and English articles were reviewed. Results: Fasting does not cause complications during pregnancy and lactation including
weight loss, preterm labor, reduced neonatal IQ, as well as reduced anthropometric
neonatal indexes including birth weight, height and head perimeter. Conclusion: It does not seem fasting that a 12-hour fasting period can cause problems for
mothers, and mothers wishing to fast in Ramadan must be under prenatal care.
