Background and purpose: A major share of caring diabetics falls on the patient himself
throughout their lifetime. Acute and chronic complications can be prevented by
continuous follow-up and self-care; or their occurrence can be postponed. Knowing the
individual and social factors related to self-care in diabetics can be a basis for educational
programs and a guarantee for their success. Therefore, the present study was conducted to
investigate the self-care status of diabetics in Sabzevar, Iran, and to identify the social and
individual factors affecting and related to patients’ self-care. Methods and materials: This descriptive analytical study was conducted on 400
diabetics admitted to Sabzevar diabetics Center, who were selected by randomized
sampling. The relevant data were collected by randomized sampling. A researcher-made
questionnaire was used for data collection. Data analysis was done in SPSS using chisquare,
t-test and logistic regression.
Results: the results indicated that self-care mean score was 27.4 out of 47. There was
significant relationship between self-care and other factors such as gender, age,
educational level, and social support.
Conclusion: the findings suggest that self-care is satisfactory. In addition to identifying
the social and individual factors affecting the self-care protocols, it is essential that
educational programs are planned on the basis of these factors.
