Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most important health issues in developing countries. Understanding the epidemiology of tuberculosis is critical for effective disease control. This study aimed at investigating the epidemiology of TB in Darmian, Iran.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was designed based on the data from diseases surveillance systems, all data related to TB cases in Darmian during 2006-2011 were collected based on the data registration notebooks. The analysis was performed using SPSS 18 software by use of statistical tests including Chi-Square.
Results: A total of 82 cases were reported during 2006-2011, with mean age of 58.5 years. The majority of them (65.9%) were female. From total of 82 cases, 97.6% were Iranians. Most of our total cases, 69 patients (84.1%), had pulmonary TB.95.1% were new cases and 4.9% were relapses regarding to the disease type. Housewiferies (59 patients (61%)) were mostly infected. The incidence rate of positive smear of pulmonary TB in Darmian was 17 in 100000. The highest and lowest incidence rate was 12/100000 in 2008 and 30/100000 in 2011.
Conclusion: Regarding the high prevalence of TB in Darmian, it is necessary to follow up cases, prevent and treat TB in the health-care system of the city, so that an appropriate condition for decrease of TB incidence would be provided. Increasing in TB incidence shows the necessity of screening, early diagnosis and perfect treatment
