Background: Birth weight is a measure of health status in communities. Low birth weight (LBW) is one of the most serious global health problems and is an important cause of neonatal mortality. Studies show that more than 30-50 percent of LBW neonatal, are premature. In this study we investigated the prevalence of a four-year period (2008-2011) of LBW and neonatal mortality causes, and evaluated the process and effects of the existing interventions.Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, all data related to birth and mortality of the newborns in Fariman city, between 2008-2011, were gathered. Study population was 7763 birth and 80 death. The Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-squared test in SPSS software.
Results: The overall prevalence of LBW in the study period was 6.1 percent, and was lower than other cities. But its trend has been rising during the mentioned period; So that it is increased from 5.81 percent in 2008 to 6.45 percent at the end of 2011. The results showed that although male birth was more than female birth (50.4 versus 49.4); nevertheless the prevalence of LBW in female newborns was more than male newborns (6.57 versus 5.57). The most common causes of mortality in this study was prematurity (56.25%), congenital anomalies (27.5%), birth injuries and respiratory infections (each ones 2.5%), and other causes (10%). Conclusion: Due to the increasing trend of LBW in Fariman; and prematurity as the most common cause of neonatal mortality; and correlation between LBW and prematurity (half of the cases are premature), we conclude that it is necessary to improve the quality of maternal care and enhance the awareness. Also identification and follow up of high-risk mother should be considered to prevent low birth weight and prematurity.
