[English]

Background and Aims:
The nutritional conditions of the hospitalized patients depend on the initial status and care provided at the hospital. The aim of study was to investigate the changes in nutritional status of patients with neurological diseases using biochemical indices, anthropometry and nutritional risk index during the period of admission to the intensive care unit.
Materials and Method:
present descriptive study evaluated the nutritional status of patients with neurological diseases during the first five days of admission to the intensive care unit. General information of patients was recorded. The difference in nutritional status with regard to laboratory, anthropometric measurements and nutritional risk index (NRI) was analyzed for the period of first 5 days of hospitalization using SPSS software.
Results:
The mean age of the patients participating in the study was 50.7 ± 17.2 Y/O. At the end of the 5-days admission, there were a significant decrease in the size of mid arm circumference and amount of albumin (P-value<0.001), transferrin, total serum protein and hemoglobin (P-value: 0.02). There was a significant increase in the nutritional risk index (P-value<0.001).
Conclusion:
This study demonstrated the importance of evaluating nutritional status at the time of arrival of patients and the need for timely and adequate nutrition support for patients with neurological diseases to prevent the development of nutritional problems. The study also found that the nutritional risk index alone could be a measurable indicator for nutritional assessment.
